John W. Simmons was born on June 19, 1928, in Autryville, North Carolina, to the late Edward Simmons and Emma Crumpler Simmons. He departed this life on June 4, 2017, in Christiana Hospital, Newark, Delaware. Johney received his early education in the North Carolina Cumberland County School System. He was baptized at the age of 12 at the Union Hill Baptist Church. He became a member of Mother AUMP Church in 1970, under the leadership of Rev. George Francis Brown, where he served on the Steward Board. He enjoyed watching old cowboy movies, talking about anything that had to do with cars, and telling stories.
He was employed by the Allied Kid Company for over 20 years, and was a member of Local #199, Laborer International Union for over 15 years, where he was a skilled laborer.
On July 31, 1971, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Ethel Marie Brown, who preceded him in death in 2001. He was also preceded in death by a sister Cordia E. McLaurin Simmons. and brothers, James Sunday Simmons and Edgar Bark Simmons (EB).
He leaves to cherish his memory, a daughter, Sharon Lee Jones; a devoted son-in-law, Charles Matthew Jones; a granddaughter, Tiffany LaShelle Jones; a brother Merl Hair of Wilmington; a loyal and dedicated friend, Marshall Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Home Going Service will be 11 am, Saturday, June 10th, at Mother AUMP Church, 812 N. Franklin Street, Wilmington, DE 19805; viewing 9-10:45 am only. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Wilmington.
