Reflections of Loretta Coney-Smith
I was born on July 28, 1961 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania where my mother Sally Gooden Coney resided. My mother exemplified hard work and instilled good values that all mothers want their children to follow. I was later raised in Summerville, New Jersey where I made lifelong friends, like Joyce & Joan Daniels and Dave & Gertrude Hinson. I was later educated at Cheney State University where I majored in Business Administration.
At the age of 20, I settled into the West Chester, Pennsylvania community. While at Cheney State I made new friends and I developed a love for musical entertainment. I nurtured a close professional relationship with Aaron King which started in the 80’s. We performed in a band called Kharisma and tested our ability to entertain audiences. That was the true litmus test as to whether we could make a living in the musical entertainment business.
In 1992 I met my husband, Ron Smith, on a night river cruise in Philadelphia, PA on the Spirit of Philadelphia, with my close friend Karen Jackson. Little did Ron know that I wasn’t Jamaican as I used it to bait and catch him (smile). We eventually married in 1995 and had two wonderful little boys, Akil and Jelani, who have grown up to be great young men; they are my heart, my love and will forever be with me. Akil is in South Korea teaching English and Jelani (Eagle Scout) is about to earn his next set of flying wings in flight school at Ohio University where he aspires to be a commercial pilot and business major.
I supported my family by working in the videography and music industry. I began my video experience when I met Dr. Twin B. Brown at Community Communications Corporation in Wilmington Delaware around 2000. I was often on Twin’s channel 28 television show and performed countless video production assignments throughout Delaware which includes our beloved Vice President Joe Biden and Congresswoman Lisa Blunt.
My talents eventually gave me an opportunity to work for the famous Will Smith family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where my band, Sudden Impact, has performed on various occasions under Shootingstar Productions. My talents have taken me from the East to the West coast working various singing performances in my band called Sudden Impact with Kym Branch, Aaron King, Mark Kirby, Mike Jamison and many others with my posse in tow like Kim Franklin, Taria Crawford, Scotty Oshiro, Vicki White and others.
On Monday, July 10, 2017 at 12:35 AM, God in His infinite wisdom, called me home. I have lived a bless life, with a caring and faithful husband who only occasionally got on my nerves (smile), a loving family, lifelong friends, and my adoring sons Akil & Jelani.
I am survived by: my husband, Ronald V. Smith; children, Akil and Jelani Smith; my father figure, Sam Johnson; mother, Sally Coney; brother, Ricky Coney; and sister, Julia Coney. I have a host of nieces and nephews whom I love dearly, Serena, Gracie, Nicky, Janeen, Miles, Rodney, Robert and Roosevelt and Savon; great-niece, Ashly; great-nephews, Trey, Justin, Chico, and Christopher; and great-great niece, Madison; my brothers-in-law Denny and Jimmy; sisters-in-law, Karen, Joyer, Pat and Eunice.
