MURIEL GERTRUDE JONES peacefully transitioned from this life to eternal rest Sunday, September 10, 2017 at the Christiana Hospital, Wilmington, Delaware. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Herbert Earl Jones, son, Byron Harden, two sisters, Jerrye Mears and Vesteria Downing.

Born on April 24, 1930 in Mackemie Park, Virginia, Accomac County, she was the oldest of three children born to the late Edward Downing and Sarah Nottingham Downing.

Muriel graduated from Mary Nottingham Smith High School, Accomac, Virginia. Later she attended Maryland State College with an interest in Elementary Education.

From her marriage to the late John Elliot Harden came three children, the late Byron Harden, Keith Harden and Vashti Harden. Following his demise, she relocated with her children from Florida to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She re-married the late Herbert Earl Jones, and from this union she was blessed with another child, Malcolm Jones.

Muriel was a power house of character. Always very engaging, a friend to the friendless, a pillar of strength to the weak and majestic in her walk. She had a humble spirit, offering invaluable insight about life, a tireless soul with an infectious smile. Her friends and family knew her as a lovable person, very spirited and feisty. Always the “light” at family gatherings. She would have you laughing with her colorful stories told in a way that only she could describe.

She had a deep love for her family and was our ‘rock’. Her life was an example of grace, courage, strength, determination, faith, hope, and perseverance.

Muriel had a way with people that would touch the heart in a special way, showing nothing but “Love”. Her smile was “Love” winking at you.

During her retirement years from SPD Technologies, some of her favorite past times were reading books, doing crossword puzzles, playing bingo, and traveling, but most of all, spending time with her family and friends, especially during the holidays.

She will be missed by all who came to know and love her. She reached the hearts of many. Muriel leaves to cherish her memory: sons, Keith Harden, Sr. and Malcolm Jones; daughter, Vashti Harden; grandsons, Keith Harden, Jr., Julian Earl Jones and Mark Lockett; niece,Vesteria Mears Wilson; nephews, Mahalon L. Mears and Douglas Selby; brother-in-law, Mahalon T. Mears; adopted son, Jerry Jackson; Other survivors include great grandchildren, many relatives and friends.
