October 24, 1938 ~ January 27, 2018 (age 79)

Roma Mae (Howie) Lewis, of New Castle, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 27, 2018 in Newark, Delaware. Roma was born in Wilmington, Delaware on October 24, 1938 to Odell, Sr. and Estelle (Henry) Howie. She graduated from Howard High School where she studied cosmetology and went on to receive her cosmetology license. After high school she worked in several hair salons throughout the New Castle area as a beautician.

In the early seventies, Roma attended Delaware State College (now Delaware State University) where she studied sociology, while working full-time in the Delaware Public Schools System and raising her two wonderful children, Fern (Howie) Boyer and James Howie. After 16 years of service in the school system, Roma went on to work for General Motors Corporation. In November 2000, she retired after more than 25 years of service at the tender age of 62. For the next 10 years following her retirement, Roma served as a volunteer Recording Secretary for the retirees of the Union Auto Workers Local 435.

In her spare time, Roma loved spending time with her family and close friends. She was a member of Faith City Family Church, an avid bowler, and loved gardening, cooking, dancing, traveling and a good old-fashioned joke.

Roma was preceded in death by her mother and father, Odell, Sr. and Estelle Henry Howie; her only brother, Odell, Jr.; her former husband, George Lewis; her nephew, Sean Howie; and her nieces: Roma and Renee Howie.

She is survived by her two children: Fern Boyer and husband, Isaiah Boyer, Jr.; James Howie and wife, Wanda Howie; grandchildren: Isaiah Boyer, III and wife, Stephanie Boyer; Tywanda Cuffy and husband, Andrew Cuffy, Coree Richardson and wife, Ebaneke Richardson; seven great grandchildren: Raven, Nasjea, Rayne, Cinai, Isaiah IV, Shiloh and Maya; two sisters, Gwendolyn and Jean Howie; three nephews: Kevin, Kenny and Charles Howie; three nieces: Verona, Laura, Chiriga; extended family members: Theron Palmer, Shena Taylor, Dewayne Flowers and Joyce Akins; a host of great nieces and nephews; and family and friends in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and California.

Funeral 11 AM Tue., Feb. 6th at Congo Funeral Home, 201 N. Gray Ave. Wilm., DE 19805; viewing from 9-10:45 AM.

Burial, Gracelawn Memorial Park.
