Vera Wilcox was born on July 1, 1933 in Helena, GA to the late Vera Allen and John D. Allen. She was educated in the Telfair County School System and upon graduation, came to Philadelphia, PA to work. She started out as domestic worker and later went on to become a seamstress in some of the clothing factories in Philadelphia. It was in Philadelphia that she was introduced to and later married Inell Wilcox, who preceded her in death in December of 2007. From that union, 3 children were born, Sherwin, Paula, and Michael. She joined New Thankful Baptist Church, and later became apart of St. Stephens Catholic Church.
Vera was active in her community. She worked as a committee person in her district for many years; working the election polls to get people out to vote. She also worked with the Judge of Elections for many years during election time.
She enjoyed sewing and baking for family and friends and then turned her skills into a small business. She enjoyed making clothes for various people. She was truly gifted and many people came to count on her to make that "special outfit" that would make them shine.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Neil Wilcox. She is survived by 3 children: Sherwin (Pam), Paula and Michael (Janice); three grandchildren: Janeece, Michael Jr., and Jala; 2 sisters: Janie Wright and Odessa Lawton; a host of other relatives and friends.
