Cora E. Johnston, age, 93, was born on September 14, 1925, in Booneville, NC, the daughter of the late Sidney Gadberry and Mary Hunt Gadberry. She departed this life on January 26, 2019, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Cora had worked for many years as a Manager at LeRoy’s Style Shop in Wilmington, DE. She also worked as a data entry clerk for Cigna Insurance Company, as an assistant teacher for Head Start, and as a Receptionist at the City-County Building in Wilmington, Delaware.
She was a member of New Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she served as an usher and sang in the Senior Choir. She was a former Grand Worthy Matron of the Eastern Stars.
Cora had served in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps during WWII and had a tour of duty in Europe. She received an honorable discharge in 1945, after having achieved the Rank of Sergeant and being assigned as a driver for a Four-Star General. While in the service she was a member of an entertainment group where she became a solo singer, entertaining the troops on numerous occasions.
In addition to her parents, Cora was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Johnston who died in Bermuda, and her brother, David Gadberry who passed in Detroit, Michigan.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory: one daughter, Pamela L. Scott; 1 granddaughter, Korynn McGregor-Aldinor (Alain), 1 grandson Garrick McGregor, II; 2 great-grandsons, Mason Aldinor and Jaxon Aldinor, other family and friends.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, March 16, 2019, at New Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 1402 N. Market Street, Wilmington, Delaware 19801, where the family will receive friends from 11-11:45 am.
