Debra Jackson Spence

July 16, 1952 ~ November 3, 2018 (age 66)

Debra Jackson Spence, age 66, departed this life on Nov. 3, 2018, in Christiana Care Health System, Newark, Delaware. She is the daughter of the late Earl Claywood Jackson Sr. and Mildred Lucille (Sylvers) Jackson; and sister of the late Norma Jewell Jackson and Ear C. Jackson, Jr.

Debra attended the public schools in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland with a B.S. in Elementary Education, and a M. Ed., Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Delaware. 

Debra was a member of Ezion-Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.  She served as a scripture reader, a member of the United Methodist Women, a reader for the Hanging of the Greens Christmas service, participated as a narrator in the Christmas Catata, and attended Bible Study. 

Her various employers included: New Castle County School District, Beneficial National Bank U.S.A., Delaware Department of Labor, Office of Governor Michael N. Castle, Division of Public Health-DHSS, Peoples Settlement Association, Inc., William Hicks Anderson Community Center, Kingswood Community Center, Inc., Sojourners’ Place, Delaware Futures, and Wilmington HOPE Commission. She also had the following skills: Development/Organizational Consultant, a proposal writer, capital development funding, administrative support, grant monitoring, public relations, and media communications.

Debra received the following awards: Recipient of Community Service Award, Commendations from Congressman Michael N. Castle, Governor Thomas R. Carper, New Castle County Executive Dennis Greenhouse, the Northeast Alliance, and the Office of Mayor James H. Sills, Jr.

Debra was a past member of the Brandywine School District Marketing and Communications Committee, Board of Directors of Interfaith Housing Delaware, Inc., Board of Directors of Delaware Ecumenical Council on Children and Families, and the 2004 & 2006 Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy Committee, City of Wilmington.  She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Sigma Zeta Omega chapter of Newark, Delaware.

Debra has no surviving immediate family; however, she leaves to cherish her Ezion-Mount Carmel United Methodist Church family, devoted friend Audrey Boyer, and numerous friends that loved and cared for her.  The excellent care and support of Christiana Care Hospital, Neuro ICU and Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care was sincerely appreciated.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Nov. 10th at Ezion Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, 800 N. Walnut St., Wilmington, DE 19801. The viewing will be at the church from 9-10:45 AM. Her burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery on Wednesday, November 14, 2018.
