Evelyn Virginia Brown

November 14, 1918 ~ July 31, 2018 (age 99)

Evelyn Virginia Brown, daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth (Cooper) and James Irvin Brown, was born November 14, 1918; she transitioned to her heavenly home on July 31, 2018. Evelyn was one of 13 children and was the last surviving sibling. She was predeceased by her son Charles Leroy Brown, Sr. and daughter-in-law Celestine Brown.

Her early childhood was spent in the Summit Bridge/Kirkwood, Delaware area.  At an early age she attended the St. Paul Methodist Church in Kirkwood, Delaware.  St. Paul is now recognized as the Brown Family Church. The family gathers there for service every year on the 2nd Sunday in September.

After moving to Wilmington, Evelyn joined the Mt, Joy United Methodist Church and later transferred to Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church. She was one of the original members of the combined churches known as Ezion-Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.  At Ezion-Mt. Carmel she was a member of the Gospel Choir and The CARE Program.  For several years Evelyn was the church dispatcher for the church bus. Her duties included contacting and receiving calls for bus riders. She then prepared a list of riders for the bus drivers.  Since she also rode the bus to church, which usually arrived before service, she looked forward to “folding the church programs”.

Until her health began to fail Evelyn attended the St. Patrick Senior Center and participated in their activities. She enjoyed the fellowship there and volunteered in their Clothes Closet. Her responsibility was helping to organize things in the Closet.

Evelyn had a generous spirit and personality. She was one to rally around and help, particularly during illnesses of her friends, sisters and brothers and other family members.

Evelyn was a resident of the Kentmere Health Care Center since November 2012.  If there were activities going on, she was anxious to participate. She was usually leading the group to go to bingo, Sunday church services, wine and cheese parties, chair Zumba, art classes, and happy hour.  During the singing at church services and happy hour, it was amazing that she knew the words to the many songs.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the life of her daughter, Pearl Wallace and her husband William. Also, she is survived by her grandchildren: Lynne Roots (Stefan) of Middletown DE, Karla Twyman of Bear DE, Tracey Twyman of Upper Marlboro MD, Matthew Twyman III (Carmen) of South Orange NJ, Valarie Loper (Kevin) of Smyrna DE, and Charles Brown, Jr. and Curtis Miles of Wilmington DE; great grandchildren:  Jordan Milton of Wilmington DE, Stefanie and Cameron Brown of Smyrna DE, Bryce, Colby and Xavier Twyman of South Orange NJ; and great-great grandson, Conard Brown of Smyrna DE.  Evelyn is also survived by her long-time friend Martha Caldwell of Wilmington, DE and many nieces and nephews who affectionally called her “Aunt Chum."

The family would like to thank the Ezion-Mt. Carmel Church family that remembered Evelyn with visits and cards during her illness. Also, the family gives many thanks to Cheryl Sadeghee, Social Worker and the staff (nurses, aides, therapists, maintenance workers, and cafeteria workers) at the Kentmere Healthcare Center. A job well done.
