James Webster Cheers, son of the late Joseph and Eliza Wright Cheers, was born on June 14,1936, in Centerville, Maryland. He went home to be with the Lord on November 2, 2019, at Brackenville Center in Hockessin, Delaware.
He had been a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Mr. Cheers had worked as an assembler at General Motors, retiring in 1996 after 27 years of service when the plant closed down. He enjoyed watching baseball and wrestling. He was a jack-of-all trades and enjoyed fixing things. He loved listening to jazz music and was a sharp dresser. He took pride in his red GMC truck. He was a pillar in his community.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Addie Mary and his siblings, Barbara Cheers, Dorothy Bailey, Thelma Cheers, Eleanor Copper, Marie Tingle, and Anna Cheers.
Mr. Cheers leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Tillie Cheers; 1 daughter, Ida E. Webb (Dean); 5 step-children, Sherita Purnell, Joan Gregory, Anthony Johnson (Pamela), Marlon Johnson (Cynthia) and Michael Johnson; his siblings, William Cheers (Anna), John Cheers, Catherine Smith (Guffrie), Faye Jones, Bessie Lively, and Andrea Cheers; a devoted step-granddaughter, Tracie Dixon; A devoted step-nephew, Tyrone "PeeWee" Showell ; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren; other family and friends.
Celebration of Life Service will be 11 on Monday, November 11, 2019, at Congo Funeral Home, 2317 N. Market Street, Wilmington, DE 19802, where viewing will be from 9-10:45 am.
His interment will be on Monday, November 11, 2019, in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. Dupont Highway, New Castle, Delaware.
