Jeanne Quinn Lewis, born in St. Michaels, Maryland on November 26, 1928, was reared by beloved mother, Esther C. Porter and beloved step-father, Luther J. Porter. She departed this life Friday, October 25, 2019.
She grew up in Belvedere, and was educated in the public schools of Wilmington, graduating from Howard High School in 1946. In 1951, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Howard University after concentrating in zoology and chemistry.
In 1953, Jeanne entered into marriage with Clifton A. Lewis of Newark, DE. Together they had three children: Stephanie Jo, Antony Luther and Tracey Esther.
In 1955, she graduated from the University of Delaware with a Master of Education degree. Post-graduate work in geology was taken at West Chester University and then she pursued additional post-graduate studies in environmental sciences again at the University of Delaware.
Jeanne worked as a teacher of life and earth sciences at Bancroft, P.S.DuPont, Burnett, Bayard and Talley Middle School for 34 years.
She loved all the flora and fauna of the earth, especially cats, and beautiful music. She was an avid bridge player and taught beginning bridge for 20 years. She was a founding member of the Diamond State Bridge Club.
In her retirement she volunteered at many non-profit venues and activities, including Meals on Wheels and North Wilmington Library Branch.
Jeanne was a devout Christian. She was a long time member of Community Presbyterian Church. She later joined Hanover Presbyterian Church in 2015.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Lewis and her sister, Roma Quinn.
She leaves to mourn: her children, Stephanie L Hinson (Larry), Antony Lewis (Lynne) and Tracey E. Lewis; her grandchildren, Helena J. Lewis, Kara H. Hinson, Antony L. Lewis II, Michael C Hinson and Justin Q. Lewis; beloved cousins, Marilouise H. James, Gloria H. Thompson and Betty H. Graves, and a host of relatives and friends.
Her Celebration of Life Service will be 6:00 pm Friday, November 1, 2019 at Hanover Presbyterian Church, 1801 North Jefferson Street, Wilmington, Delaware 19802, with a viewing from 4:00 - 5:45 pm.
Her burial will be 10:00 am on Saturday, November 2, 2019 in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North Dupont Highway, New Castle, Delaware 19720.
