Mary C. Baker

January 2, 1950 ~ September 22, 2019 (age 69)

Mary Baker was born on January 2, 1950, in Florence, Mississippi to the late Jaltheus and Ruby Mannery.  She departed this life, at age 69, on Sunday, September 22, 2019, at home with her husband by her side.

Mary grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana where she attended John H. Martyn Elementary and graduated from Riverdale High School.  She met the love of her life Ronald “Ronnie" Baker, and  they relocated their family to Wilmington, DE where they settled down.  She was employed at Christiana Hospital, where she worked in the textile department for 15 years before retiring.  After retiring she returned to work at Christiana Hospital part-time.  During her time at Christiana, Mary was promoted to Service Leader in the Surgical Pack Room.  Her natural leadership and outgoing personality spoke volumes.  She was not afraid to share her opinions with anyone…just ask “Poppa Bear," a name she affectionately gave her boss, Guy Defibaugh!

Mary enjoyed her life to the fullest.  She loved to travel and see new places, often cruising the high seas with her family and friends.  She frequented Broadway plays, theatrical shows, and out of town excursions.  She participated in activities with her social group, “The Red Hatters.”  You could often find her in the “Big Easy” during Mardi Gras time.  She also liked spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.  They often had laid-back Saturdays where they would eat, sleep and watch TV all day long.  Also, she was an avid gardener.  She spent countless hours sprucing up her yard and growing vegetables and herbs.  Let’s not forget the many gatherings at her house.  Every holiday she would prepare an array of New Orleans cuisine.  She loved having fish fries, seafood boils, and barbecues.

Mary was preceded in death by: her parents, Jaltheus and Ruby Davis Mannery; one brother, Harry Davis; two sisters, Doris Mannery and Janice Harris (Cedric); two grandchildren; Nye’Cole Marioneaux and Kaia Marioneaux.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory:  Husband Ronald Baker; five children, Teresa, Tyronne (Nina), Nicole (David), Ronnie and Terri; seventeen grandchildren; three sisters, Karen (Roy), Barbara, and Sylvia; two brothers, Kenneth (Rosilyn) and Darryl (Nina, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
