Winnie G. Chandler, 84, devoted widow of Johnny E. Chandler of 60 years departed this life peacefully in the comfort of her home with her eldest daughter, Starmaine F. Ayres on September 11, 2017.
Winnie was born on May 30, 1933 in Hallwood, Virginia to the late Marvin and Bertha Trader. She received her early education in Accomack County, Virginia. She received her higher education in Wilmington, DE.
Alongside her husband, Winnie established a successful business, Chandler Hauling Co., in 1971. She also dedicated many years to children in the New Castle County Schools and St. Peter’s Catholic School.
In 1951 she married her childhood sweetheart, Johnny E. Chandler. Out of this union she leaves five children: Anthony Chandler, Sr. (Rosalyn); Starmaine F. Ayres (Alfred); Darryell Chandler (Angela); Brian Chandler (Almina) and Lisa Brown; sixteen grandchildren and thirty-seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny E. Chandler; one son, Keithan E. Chandler; one grandchild, Anthony W. Chandler, Jr. and one great-grandchild, Anise K. Fuller; three brothers, Melvin M. Trader, James C. Trader, Purnell L. Trader and A. W. Lilton Trader; two sisters, Emma B. White and Audrey A. Elvey.
Winnie began her relationship with Christ at Zoar A.M.E. Church in Selbyville, DE. Later in her adulthood she joined Fight for Families in Belvedere, DE. Winnie had many hobbies and activities that she enjoyed.
She loved cooking, entertaining, shopping, bowling, writing poetry and was a true Woman of God. Winnie would disappear to her “No Name Place” and others would seek advice from her. Her favorite gospel songs were “One Day at a Time,” “His Eyes are on the Sparrow,” and “Rough Side of the Mountain.”
Winnie also leaves to cherish her memory her siblings: Eloise K. Marshall; Goldia May Rogers; Floriene F. Hawkes; Gloria L. Cherry and Doris V. Winsley (Francis), devoted daughter-in-laws June Chandler, Gail Mills and Marie Eley; and son-in-law, David Brown; brother-in-law, Welcie Chandler (Minnie) and sister-in-law, Marian Tinsley.
