Garry V. Anderson, Sr., was born on March 15, 1954, in Wilmington, Delaware. He departed this life peacefully, with his wife Karen by his side, in the comfort of his own home, on Friday, June 12, 2020.
He received his early education at Absalom Jones School, Marbrook Elementary, Brandywine Springs Junior High and Thomas McKean High School. He also attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Garry was an outstanding athlete during his school years in all the major sports, which included football, basketball, and track and field. As a running back on his high school football team, he made a name for himself during his senior year as the State’s leading scorer. This prompted his wife (then girlfriend) to compose a poem about him entitled “Super Back.” In track and field, Garry was a team member on two championship relay teams, County and State.
Garry was formerly employed at General Motors Corporation, Haveg Industries, and Sun Ship Building and Dry Dock. Garry and his brother Anthony shared ownership of a construction company and worked together for many years. Later in life, he became known as the Paint Man, Woodman, and Contractor. Garry had a big heart, an engaging personality, and he made many friends during his life. He sold paint at various farmers markets in the area and was able to make even more friends and acquaintances.
Garry cherished his family and loved all of the family vacations and cruises in the Caribbean. Last year he was able to enjoy a most special vacation in Hawaii. The apple of his eye and his pride and joy was his grandson, Jayden, on whom he doted and bragged about to everyone. He also loved spending time and playing with his grand dog, Maui.
Garry was preceded in death by his parents Holstein P. Anderson, Sr. and Lucille Taylor Anderson, along with four sisters, Doris Joyner, Arvella Robinson, Catherine Anderson and Teresa Wilkes, and two sisters-in law, Mable and Thomasonia.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Karen, son Garry, Jr., daughter-in-law Christina and grandson Jayden; brothers Holstein P. Jr., Sylvester C., Ernest L. (Judith), Earl W., Albert T., Roland C., Anthony E., and Wayne G. (Judi). He also leaves behind a brother-in-law Delmar Joyner, aunts, uncles, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
God saw him getting tired and only an ultimate cure could be. So He put his arms around him and whispered come to me. His golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
Celebration of Life Service will be:11:00 AM, Thursday, June 18, 2020, at Congo Legacy Center, 501 W. 28th Street, Wilmington, DE 19802, where his viewing will be from 9:00-10:45 AM only. Burial will take place at Gracelawn Memorial Park
