Joe Rushing, III

July 11, 1939 ~ July 15, 2020 (age 81)

Obituary

Joe was the son of Joe and Dena Rushing, and was born on July 11, 1939 in Eastman, Georgia. As a child Joe learned to hunt and fish, and his mother taught him how to cook. Joe attended Mt. Olive High School in Georgia where he played on the basketball team. He had many hobbies including music and even taught himself how to play the electric guitar by ear. Joe also continued to express a great interest in sports, and specifically loved basketball, wrestling, and drag racing.

He left Georgia at 17 years old and moved to Pompano Beach, Florida to live with family. Shortly after he moved to Oviedo, Florida. Here he gained experience working many types of jobs including construction, migrant farming, and auto-mechanics. Joe was blessed to meet the Allen family who welcomed him into their home as though he were one of their own children. During this time Joe was also introduced to Mary Smith, and the two were united in Holy matrimony on January 31, 1960. Seven children were born from this union, two of which passed away.

In order to provide a better life for their family Joe and Mary moved their family to Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1971. While living in Pennsylvania, Joe worked as a truck driver for Schwerman Trucking Company. Additionally, Joe ran a trucking business with one of his closest friends named Perry, and eventually ran his own auto-body mechanic shop. In 1987 Joe and Mary moved to Newark, Delaware where Joe continued to work as both a truck driver and mechanic. Joe was dedicated to his relationship with God and the church. During his life Joe also served as a Reverend.  While living in Pennsylvania he attended Second Baptist Church in Bethlehem, PA, and while living in Delaware he attended Pilgrim Church.

In 2003 Mary Rushing passed away. Joe eventually retired from a majority of his previous work, and married Ruby Rushing. Joe and Ruby returned to Joe’s home state of Georgia, where he continued some of his mechanic work. He departed this life July 15, 2020, in Jonesboro, Georgia
