Steven Jeffrey Cooke, age 65, suddenly passed away on Monday, February 24, 2020 in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. He was born on Thursday, November 24, 1954 to the late Willie Mae Cooke in Brooklyn, New York. At the the tender age of eleven, Steve lost his mother and a couple of years later, his stepdad. He then was sent to live with his Aunt Mary, affectionately known as “Aunt Spunky,” ultimately growing up in Wilmington, Delaware. The family made sure Steve was in contact with his sister Geneen,with whom he spent summers and holidays in Brooklyn.
“Steve or Stevie”as he was affectionately called, was a 1972 graduate of De La Warr High School and 1976 graduate of Delaware Technical Community College earning his Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and was honorably discharged. He received the rank of Sergeant and was given a “Medal for Good Conduct”. He served his country as a proud “Marine”. Steve was employed at Hewlett Packard for ten years and held various computer and information technology positions throughout his career. He worked abroad as a government IT contractor at Camp Bondsteel United States Army Base in Kosovo for five years, prior to his employment at Intersections, his most recent as an IT Operations Support Analyst in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Steve was always known for being an awesome person to work with. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and especially abroad.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother Willie Mae Cooke, Aunt Mary “Spunky” Hopkins and Aunt Diane “Diana” Cooke.
He is survived by his only son Corey Scott of Wilmington, Delaware; one sister, Geneen Byrd (Robert) of Charlotte, North Carolina; two nephews, Jason Stevens of Raleigh, North Carolina and Derrick Stevens (Kamille) of Charlotte, North Carolina; two nieces, Sabrina Nolen (Miles) of Denver, Colorado and Tasha Memminger of Austin, Texas; three great nephews and one great niece, cousins Harry Hopkins, Kevin Hopkins, Gregory Cooke and Corey Cooke, Uncle William Cooke, Jr., and a host of relatives and friends.
His Celebration of Life Service will be 11:30 am, Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at Congo Legacy Center, 501 W. 28th Street, Wilmington, Delaware 19802, with a viewing from 9:00 am-11:15 am.
Steve will be laid to rest at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear, DE 19701.
