Tainikka “Nikki” Saunders, age 47, of Wilmington, Delaware departed this life on September 07, 2020 peacefully in her home. Born in Wilmington, on September 29, 1972 to Brenda C.F. Saunders and James W. Saunders, she was her father’s only child and always reminded by him of how much he prayed for her every birthday. She was definitely a “Daddy’s Girl."
Nikki received her education at Delcastle Technical High School, Wilmington, DE and graduated from Lincoln University (PA), where she received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education.
Nikki, as she was affectionately known, fulfilled her life’s calling by becoming a teacher. Nikki had assurance that she had been called by God into the field of education at a young age. She was first employed with Coatesville Area School District and later moved to Colonial School District, recently celebrating 25 years with the district. She taught at the following schools: Martin Luther King Elementary, Colwyck Elementary, Eisenberg, and New Castle Elementary.
Prior to her passing, Nikki was serving as a 4th grade teacher at New Castle Elementary School, where she was dearly loved by students and staff. Nikki was a teacher 24 hours a day and seven days a week. She helped many family members, neighbors, and friends with their children. In 2019, Nikki received Teacher of the Year Award from New Castle Elementary School.
Nikki also loved to clean and shop. You could always depend on her to let you know where the latest sale was going to be. She knew how to catch a bargain and was always willing to share with others. She always said, “God put me on this earth to teach, shop, and share!”
Nikki was a faithful and dedicated member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church for many years under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Sylvester S. Beaman. Nikki was known for lighting up any room she walked into with her contagious smile.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Charles and Ethel Carter, Dorothy Saunders and James Bratcher, her mother-in-law that she adored, Rev. Elsie Dale-Wilson, and her uncle, Howard Carter.
