Joseph Luther Goodwin, age 85, was born September 5, 1932 in Oakhill, Virginia to the Joseph Goodwin Sr. and Nellie Barnes. He departed this life on May 10, 2018.
Joseph received his early education in the Wilmington public school system and after finishing 11th grade he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the Korean War where he was wounded in the leg and was honorably discharged. He received a Purple Heart Medal and a Korean Service Medal.
Joseph met Bernice Billings in 1956 they were married for over 35 years and raised 3 children together, Robert, Linda and Rochelle Billings.
He served as Post Sr. Commander of VFW Post 6687 from 1993 to 1996. He worked for Delaware Technical and Community College, Wilmington Campus for 30 years until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Goodwin and daughter, Rochelle McLeish.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his son Robert Billings, Sr. (Jenita) and one daughter, Linda Ingram; six grandsons, Brian, Jason, Robert, George, Joseph and Frank Gosa; one brother Robert Goodwin and one sister Doretha Cumberbatch; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Service 11am, Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at the Congo Funeral Home, 2317 North Market Street, Wilmington, DE, 19802; viewing, 9 - 10:45am.
Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.
